We were so happy to find this place on our last night in York. The chicken piccata was very good - tender chicken and great flavor. The Chicken Parmesan and Chicken Saltenbocca earned raves as well. The complementary after dinner drink was a very nice touch. Mimmo himself was awesome. He meets seats guests and thanks you as you leave. A nice, fun experience that I didn't expect to find on the Maine coast.

When you step inside Mimmo's it has the cozy feel of a Mom & Pop operation, lots of locals, friendly servers and hostess. And it's BYOB! But unfortunately that might be the real draw here because the food just isn't that good. Garlic bread was pedestrian at best. Salad was mostly yellow tinged iceburg with weak dressing. No ripe tomatoes/ cukes so easy to get mid-August. My pasta dish was bland - pesto sauce was runny. My son didn't eat his meatball which is a sure sign something is wrong. Red sauce was thin with a suspicious orange hue. Server overcharged us $20. To be honest maybe the BYOB (people literally had coolers next to their tables!) lends itself to customers being less attentive to the math on the tab.

Never a disappointment. Came here 22 years ago, and food is just as good. I miss Mafioso the cat walking around..Mimmo is a great guy..love what he does..beautiful place, , directly across from the ocean..

Service was good, everyone was overly kind and pleasant! I ordered lasagna and Stouffer's frozen lasagna is what it was like. That being said it was consumable but definitely not "home baked". My husband got the chicken parm and it was awful. We have had better good in a pizzeria. The prices are insanely high and the portions are small. Amazing food! Came in from out of state and walked along the beach to grab a bite. We got so much more! Great food and memories we still talk about. Cannot wait to go again in October!! Good thing we walked back, we were stuffed!!!

Mimmo's is great. It's the only BYOB restaurant that I've ever been to that costs more than $20 a plate, but the food is great, the atmosphere home-like, and the free dessert drinks are an added touch of brilliance. Two things to know: delicious free garlic bread and Mimmo, the namesake, has a great ponytail.

Mimmo's has been a tradition for over 15 years and Mimmo is still on site visiting tables and opening BYO Wine bottles for his customers. A really fun time every time I visit. The layout is like having dinner at your cool uncles place, you could sit on the porch or in the dining room, either way it is great. This place is right on the ocean, with great views of the sea and even Nubble lighthouse. Great italian food (do not expect Olive Garden flavors). I am shocked by the negative reviews... A note to the disappinted, don't disrespect the owners when you visit a family restaurant. You will, without question, receive poor and rude service in return for your inexcusable rudeness. It is their house, respect it or walk out the door. Go visit a chain where you belong. Prices high? Not unless you frequent fast food chains or are used to dining at mom's house. Did I mention that this place is ON THE OCEAN! Sorry but the negative reviews must be competitors, I have been coming here for nearly 20 years and have never had a bad experience. I am also not an ass, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

This place has a fantastic atmosphere. It is right across from Long Sands Beach and the owners are always there to greet you with a smile. The service is friendly and attentive from the moment you step in the door. Each member of our table for four was delighted with their food. The garlic bread brought to the table when you're first seated was greatly appreciated and delicious. And you gotta love the BYOB! After the meal you have a choice between a shot of sambuca or amaretto, completely complimentary! Great service, great food, GREAT location! This place has it all! As a frequenter of York I will most definitely be back.

This restaurant presents a great opportunity for a tv show to do a makeover. The only good aspect was the service, which I would rate a 4.5 to 5. Friendly, fast and caring. Food was just ok, if not a bit subpar, although the garlic bread was excellent - make sure to fill up on that. My dish that was supposed to be vermicelli with shrimp, scallops and calamari, arrived with a ton of calamari, red pepper? (fra diavolo, but thats not how I ordered it), vermicelli but no shrimp or scallops. It wasn't until my wife commented on having to peel the shell off her shrimp that I realized I had none. To the waitstaff and chef's credit, they did produce shrimp and scallops for me in a better red sauce than the one that came originally. But this was after we had finished our meal. And I too peeled the shell off half the shrimp. There really wasn't any wow factor with the food - just plain and other than my dish, fairly tasteless. So food I'd give 2.5 to 3 stars. Portions were plentiful, but other than my son who was starving, we had no desire to clear our plates. But not chef boy ardee or olive garden low. But what really got us was the decor. Water served in clear plastic solo cups. Cheap table linens. Half the tables having fairly cheap wooden chairs, half the tables having plastic lawn chairs (INSIDE)!. Fake flowers everywhere. Would not return or recommend, unless out of desperation.

Really? 4.5 stars? I would give them .5 if I could. I have no idea what these people are talking about becuase I had the worst dining experience of my life at this place. We walked in and nobody was at the front desk to greet us.. it took us a few minutes to realize we had to just walk in and find our own seat. I was put off by the nose-picking cook but tried to ignore it and enjoy a dinner with my good friends. I was very excited about the fact that it's BYOB. So we had some wine and it was delicious. Then I noticed strangely placed (on the window sills of this old house converted restaurant) 8.5x11 photographs of some old guy and various pets. One was with him and a cat, and another was him with a parrot on his shoulder. I assumed this was the owner of the place but my god were these unappetizing. We faced them out the window... maybe the people walking by would enjoy them more than us. Now it was time to order - not many gluten-free options which is understandable given that this is an italian restaurant - pasta, pasta, pasta! I orded some chicken dish and didn't even want to bother our rude waitress with gluten questions so I hoped for the best. Everybody's meal came with a weird salad. a slice of an unripe tomato, some chickpeas, a canned beet slice... some other weird stuff... not very good... About 5 people at the table hated their food, it was gross, colorless, tasteless and mushy. We were all starving and this was a huge disappointment. The only good thing was the garlic bread. They kept bringing it out as if they were trying to make up for their disguisting food. Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy the bread. At the end of the meal we were served 4 shots of amaretto - on the house. How nice! But, there were 8 of us. I hope they can take this criticism and do something about it. This is an unprofessional, rude place to be. Seriously, eat somewhere else. For your own good. Oh yeah, and the prices were ridiculous.

I disagree with most of what everyone says. Sure, it's BYOB and right on the beach, but I could sneak some wine in a juice bottle and bring it onto the beach and enjoy a can of chef boyardee that is more delicious than this place. if you're into trying something other than spaghetti and meatballs, seriously go somewhere else. Everything is drowned in sauce. A dish that sounded delicious - spring veggies, scallops, shrimp - tasted like lemons wrapped around a stick of butter. Go ANYWHERE else. The food is terrible.

My husband and I love Mimmo's! We come once a month, mostly with friends. We love their salad and garlic bread. I have never had a meal that I didn't like. The prices are very reasonable, considering that the salad and garlic bread are included, and it is a BYOB restaurant. We love being on the beach! And we love Mimmo!

fantastic! make reservations. Food was beyond great. Mimmo chatted with my table, originally from Italy, moved to Long Island, then to Maine. One of THE best places in York and I've been going there for years. Garlic bread, appetizers, salads, pasta and seafood. BYOB.

It is an experience to walk into this charming old house right across the street from Long Sands Beach and be welcomed by Mimmo himself. Perhaps it was because I was travelling alone and greeted him with a robust; "Buona sera!", that he was incredibly kind and seated me at a window table in a cozy room all to myself - and poured me a complimentary glass of wine from his personal bottle. No charge. I did forget to BYOB so was most grateful. The food may seem pricey, at first glance, but you will not leave here hungry. And frankly, who doesn't love a doggie bag? A large basket of garlic bread arrives once you are seated, and there are many excellent choices on the menu. Veal 7 ways, H.M. ravioli, fra diavalo sauce if you want, & delicious sounding apps for 2 including Clams Rockerfeller. I had steak a la pizziola, because I was craving meat after a bit of lobster O.D. It was served with oodles of good mushrooms, onion and peppers, in a hearty marinara, all topped with mozzarella...and a huge side of pasta. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender. NO complaints. I could not finish it of course. But somehow I just had to try the H.M. tiramisu, for a reasonable $5.50. It was not great, so next time I would skip dessert. They do something over-the-top--lovely .....and rare.... offering a free cordial after dinner - your choice of Amaretto or Sambuca. How sweet is that? And it is a generous shot too! I wobbled out of there stuffed and very happy! Mimmo is a truly charming character, and I loved hearing him sing along with old Sinatra and Bennett songs. I definitely will return - next time hopefully, with husband in tow. You can walk off some of your filling meal right across the street - what could be better?

Mimos is one of the best italian restraunts in the southern maine area. Me and my whole 16 people family go there at least once a year and evrytime we go we have a great experience. The wait staff is kinda nice, Memo on the other hand is truley amazing! He is extreamly friendly and he always greats you and opens your wine and tells you the specials. Memo is a great family friend! The atmosphere makes you feel like your italy, never mind its on the beach! I can not recomend this place enough. I am schocked by the bad reviews, because they all sound like BS okay I totallly recomend this place!

Excellent view, bring your own alcohol which makes the price economical, and a complimentary shot of Zambuca or one other cordial which escapes me but great with coffee wit their authentic taramasue. If you don't like garlic let your server know, I love it and authentic Italian calls for inhuman amounts, this restaurant does it right. I highly recommend any dish as I watch the other customers dig in. The garlic bread, all you can eat is just what this dining experience needed to be Italian extraordinary.. Save room, you will enjoy. Mussels are fabulous, seafood cost azure, magnificent. veal Marsala, mild and buttery, like nothing I have had, and I have worked in the industry., enjoy, I would not visit the area without returning..

I like Mimmo's because my husband and I always have a nice time together when we go. The food definitely could be better, and I do think it's overpriced for what you get, but that's why we go once or twice a year and not once a month. The atmosphere is homey, with mismatched silverware and cups. I like going in the winter when I feel like I've walked into a friend's dining room and there aren't a lot of tourists there. The BYOB concept is great and that's a primary reason we go. The appetizers are for sharing, but that's the concept at most restaurants and the appetizers are wayyyyy overpriced. The food is a hit or miss. I've never had a GREAT meal there, but I've never left feeling like I wasted my time either. I like the salad they serve with their homemade dressing and the "weird" combination with the beets and chickpeas. The garlic bread is on the house and it's not bad. The food is a bit bland and everything is drenched in sauce for sure. And the place isn't always super clean. It could use a good scrubbing. But - alas, we still go because we've been going since we first started dating and it's a special place for us. We know going in that it won't be awesome. It's just okay. Which is how it's always been.

This is our favorite place for a" special" night in York. When you've grown tired of fried clams and long for traditional Italian -with a view of Long Sands and the Nubble.... go here! Mimmo is there every night and he's all the entertainment you need. The "pink" sauce is one of our favorites.

As an former Jersey girl, and 100% Italian now living in NH, and as someone who has frequented Mimmo's since January of 1998, I would like to give my honest opinion. In all fairness I gave him a 3 star rating because of the unique setting, and the friendly very pleasant service. Mimmo is a BYOB very charming place, especially during those bitter cold winter months, when he still has those Holiday decorations, playing some memorable Sinatra, Bobby Darin,Tony Bennett and Bocelli music while you sit in the comfy rooms, overlooking the Atlantic ocean, watching the waves smashing against the rocks. So yes, the atmosphere is unmatched and absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, except for the delicious garlic bread, the food itself, across the board, has consistently been below par and continues to disappoint every single time. However, I believe with some great, innovative and creative Chefs, Mimmo's be an absolute gem! And the best part is always Mimmo himself, who is quite an interesting character and that famous complementary shot at the end of the dinner. So, when all is said and done, if you will not compromise and only authentic, delicious Italian food will do, sorry, you will not find it at Mimmo's. But ... if you want that very warm, inviting ambiance, and you'll forgive the food, then yes, without a doubt, go to Mimmo's. And if you're wondering why we still frequent Mimmo's, well it's for that music, the garlic bread, and that cozy, warm and delightful setting and wonderful atmosphere. And regarding the food, well as we say in Italian, after a glass or two of some great red wine, fuggedabouotit ...ciao.

I persoanlly love Mimmo's. The food here is quite good and service attentive. A huge YELP to fellow NH Yelper Andrea Q for finding cool BYOB restaurant. SHe reports that the owners are really cool and friendly, the portions here are huge. See my Yelp list of other BYOB establishments all over New England.

For a family-style Italian restaurant, this one just didn't cut it for this Italian New York girl! The service was about as slow as it can get! The food was OK, not great by any means. Mimmo, the owner, walked around talking to people, when what he should have been doing was lighting a fire under the seats of the kitchen staff and wait staff!

My family has been vacationing in York long before I was born and we NEVER ate here-WHY? I have no idea. This is one of the best kept secret of York Beach! It took me becoming a homeowner in York to actually experience Mimmos and what a treat it was-we actually celebrated the closing of our home at Mimmos. if you are looking for some yuppie italian restaurant, then you better head back to Ogunquit, this place is not for you. its decorated in christmas lights all year long but who cares. Its BYOB, Open ALL year long on the beach, they serve complimentary after dinner cocktails and Mimmo is the most adorable owner I have met who always greets us when we come in. And the food is good-I always leave full, with leftovers and greatful that I have a great restaurant withing walking distance to my house. Its not a 5 star restaurant-the food is not out of this world but its the experience that keeps us coming back everytime!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
